Crafty

I was in the hardware store recently when I noticed a woman gathering items for what was clearly an arts and crafts project. It looked like it had something to do with birds, but I didn’t ask so I’m not sure. What I am sure of is that she was brimming with energy and enthusiasm for the task, and I am equally certain that she brought that project to a successful conclusion. She knew what she was doing. No question.

As someone who has undertaken her fair share of arts and crafts projects over the years, I can only claim a success rate of about 50%. Some turn out. Some don’t. I’m hit and miss. My crocheted afghan blanket quickly became a pot holder, but the Native American diorama I created for my son‘s fourth grade social studies project was impressive as all get out. Nobody else even came close. I doubt anyone else ever will.

So to all of you artsy craftsy types, men and women alike, my hat is off to you. In your own way, you make the world a better place, and I am a little envious. I may not have your innate talent, but I promise to keep trying.  At the moment I’m thinking about a birdhouse. That seems doable. I think. I really should have gotten the name of that woman in the hardware store.
