A Case for Cats
It has come to my attention that there are a fair number of people in this world who think that cats have a bad attitude. I could not agree less. Just because they’re aloof and slink around like they own the place is no reason to judge them harshly. They can’t help it if they are supremely confident that they have more cool than any other creature in the animal kingdom, and I will say that after careful consideration, I have to agree. Wholeheartedly. They do.
I have known plenty of cats in my time, and I’m convinced that I had the very best one ever. When I got him he was just a tiny little ball of fur, so I named him Fluffy, and when I brought him home, the kids went nuts. He soon grew into a gorgeous cat with very thick fur (we were never sure of his breed) who totally believed that he ruled the roost – inside and out. When he was outside, no animal of any kind entered his domain. The size of the animal was of no consequence to him. Big or small, they were not allowed in his territory, and he patrolled the area as if he’d had military training. When he was indoors, his eyes would always grow slitty as he cruised around watching everything and everybody with extreme suspicion. You would’ve thought he sensed danger around every corner. The only time he ever lost his cool was when he was spitting up the occasional hairball. He also seemed to need a minimum of 20 hours sleep a day, and he made sure he got it. Yeah, I really miss that cat. I was so torn up when he passed on that I’ve never gotten another one.
So although I no longer have one, I definitely count myself among the cat lovers of the world. I have long ago accepted the fact that there are a lot of people who can’t stand cats. I get it, but I still can’t for the life of me understand why. If you can get past their snobbishness, you can see that they’re cute and cuddly and lovable, and they’ve got tons of personality. You don’t agree? All right then, I challenge you to find a pet with more personality than a cat. Go ahead. Try. It won’t take you long to realize that you’ve got your work cut out for you.
