Little Ones

Little Ones

The message came at 4:35 AM. “My water broke. I’m on my way to the hospital. Game Day.” My first grandchild was about to appear.

I tried to go back to sleep, but it was impossible. I was much too excited. I prepared for a long wait. Then at 6:45 I heard the chime I had been waiting for. I opened the message, and there was a picture of my daughter lying in a hospital bed holding a small white bundle with a tiny head peeking out. Tears welled up in my eyes, and I felt like my heart would burst. She had arrived. A small part of me would live on.

That was one of the most joyous days of my life, and the joy was no less when three more grandchildren appeared a few years later. It was like having a new baby all over again each time, only I wasn’t the one who delivered them into this world. Someone else had done it for me. I had already done my bit. Now I could let somebody else do the work, and I could have the fun. Life is good.
